Chicago Heights recently submitted a grant application to take part in the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program. The ITEP is a federally funded program for community based projects that expand travel choices and enhance the transportation experience. The purpose is to improve the cultural, historic, aesthetic and environmental aspects of transportation infrastructure. The ITEP is designed to promote and develop alternative transportation options, including bike and pedestrian travel, along with streetscape beautification. The City’s proposal is for construction and streetscape beautification that will create a gateway to Chicago Heights at the intersection of Lincoln Highway and Western Avenue. The gateway to Chicago Heights would add a unique aesthetic appeal to this section of the historic Lincoln Highway. Announcements regarding successful submissions from regional municipalities will be announced this fall. For updates on this and other City news, sign up for the City of Chicago Heights weekly electronic newsletter.
