Last Saturday on National Rebuilding Day, over 750 volunteers gathered in neighborhoods throughout Chicago Heights completing free home repairs at 17 homes throughout the city.
Rebuilding Together is a nonprofit organization funded by donations from large corporations, small businesses, and public and private nonprofit organizations, and since 1991, Rebuilding Together has repaired over 1,600 homes and 250 nonprofit facilities.
Marian Catholic High School hosted the kick-off event at 7:00 AM with over 100 trade union members who were volunteering for the day. Homeowners worked with a team captain and had a budget for repairs funded by corporate, small business, public and private nonprofit donations. The repairs were based on the homeowner’s needs and included everything from a full kitchen remodeling with new appliances, to new accessible bathrooms with all new fixtures, flooring and electrical work.
In addition to the 17 home repair projects, seven Chicago Heights homes received “Safe at Home” modification improvements to enhance life-safety for residents such as smoke alarms or grab bars.
It was an unprecedented opportunity for our residents, and rain, sleet and snow could not dampen the great community spirit and enthusiasm of the volunteers and our residents.
